airside: a restricted/secured area after security check (when departing) or before going out from Baggage Claim area; passenger-only area; antonym: landside

Arrivals Hall: an area where you going after arrival and exit an airport afterwards, you can find there transport services

baggage belt/carousel: a machine which is transporting your baggage from an airplane to a baggage claim area (and claiming passengers)

baggage carts: 3 or 4-wheeled vehicle where you can place your luggage and walk with it without any effort; synonym: baggage trolleys

Baggage Claim: a place where you collect baggage from baggage belt/carousel after arriving

baggage storage: a place where you can leave your items like suitcases, bags, clothes or keys for short, medium or long-term for a fee

baggage trolleys: 3 or 4-wheeled vehicle where you can place your luggage and walk with them without any effort; synonym: baggage carts

boarding pass: a paper or electronic card with all information about your flight (like your name, flight number, flight time, gate, seat number and barcode) which you receive after check-in, you can receive a boarding pass in check-in desk, check-in kiosk or sometimes print it at home (often when travelling with low-cost carrier)

boarding: a process of going into the airplane (through the gate)

cabin baggage: your cabin-sized suitcase, bag, backpack, handbag or camera bag which you can take on board; synonyms: carry-on, hand luggage (more about cabin baggage: click here)

cancelled flight: when an airplane is not operating because of some problems, e.g. bad weather or technical defects

cell phone waiting lot: a type of car park, a waiting lot for people who are waiting for their guests

check baggage: your luggage you have to drop in a check-in desk, this baggage is flying in a special area under a cabin of your airplane; synonyms: hold baggage, register baggage (more about check baggage: click here)

Check-in Desk: a place at the airport terminal where you receive boarding pass and drop checked baggage (if any)

check-in: a process in check-in desk when you show your ticket or documents and drop checked baggage (if any) and receive boarding pass; to announce arrival at the check-in desk

concourse: a large indoor space at the airport where you can find gates

connecting flight: the name of a next flight (after the first one); next flight after layover

customs: tax or duty you have to pay when importing or exporting goods; government department or agency which is collecting taxes from imported goods and controlling the flow of goods

deleted flight: when the flight is late more than 15 minutes (more about delayed flights: click here)

Departure Lounge: or Hall; waiting room at the airport, area with chairs

departure tax: a fee you have to pay when departing from the airport (mostly included in the ticket price)

door-to-door service: a bus service which is going around the city and dropping/picking-up people in the place they want to leave/enter (like taxi but with more people); synonym: shared-ride bus

duty-free: shopping area at the airport where you can buy items without paying taxes, possible during certain flights

EC: shortened form of Euro City train

EN: shortened form of Euro Night train

e-ticket: an electronically issued ticket

expire date: a date when something (like passport or visa) become invalid

fast line: faster way to go through security check, mostly you have to pay an extra fee for this service; synonyms: fast security, fast track, priority line

gate: an entrance to the Jetway, passageway or air-bus (and airplane afterwards), passengers are going to the airplane through specific gates during boarding (gate number is written on the boarding pass-sometimes can be changed so double check on monitor before your flight)

hand luggage: your cabin-sized suitcase, bag, backpack, handbag or camera bag which you can take on board; synonyms: cabin baggage, carry-on (more about hand luggage: click here)

IC: shortened form of Inter City train

ICE/EIC: shortened form of Inter City Express train

Internet kiosk: or corner, terminal; a place with computers which are connected to the Internet

IR: shortened form of Inter Regio train

Jetway: a walking bridge which is connecting a boarding gate with an airplane

Kiss & Fly: drop-off area next to the airport where you leave your guest and drive away

landside: public area, area before security check (when departing) or outside Baggage Claim (when arriving); antonym: airside

layover: a brake between two or more flights, a pause during your journey

lockers: boxes in different sizes where you can store your items like suitcases, bags, clothes or keys for short, medium or long-term for a fee

lost & found: a place where you go when you lost or didn’t receive your baggage

Meet & Greet: area next to the airport where you pick-up your guest and drive away

minimum connecting time: official name of time that you need to change airplanes (when you have connecting flight), this time is set by airports and official institutions to be sure that passenger will not be late for his next flight; synonym: minimum transfer time

non-Schengen Area: all countries outside of the Schengen Area

observation deck: a place where you can watch surroundings, mostly you can see starting and landing airplanes; synonym: viewing deck/terrace

off-airport company: a company which is located outside an airport area

on-airport company: a company which is located in the area of an airport

over weight: when your baggage has bigger weight than the limit; in that case you have to pay an extra fee or re-pack your baggage

overbooking: situation when an airline sold more tickets than seats in the airplane

Park & Ride (P+R): a type of car park where you can leave your car and change for public transport (like bus or train); mostly cheaper than normal car park, far away from the city centre (and traffic jams)

passport issue date: a date when your passport become valid (exactly: a date when your passport was manufactured)

priority line: faster way to go through security check, mostly you have to pay an extra fee for this service; synonyms: fast line, fast security, fast track

prohibited items: things you are not allowed to take with you on board or pack to your checked baggage; synonym: forbidden items (more about prohibited items: click here)

RE: shortened form of Regional Express train

register baggage: your luggage you have to drop in a check-in desk, this baggage is flying in a special area under a cabin of your airplane; synonyms: check baggage, hold baggage (more about register baggage: click here)

Schengen Area: an agreement between 26 European countries about travelling ‘without boarders’ (there is no passport or boarder control between them), it functions like a single country when travelling (common visa policy)

security check: area between airside and landside part of an airport where security officers check your belongings to be sure that you don’t have any prohibited items

self-check-in: a process in a check-in kiosk or through the Internet when you type information about you to the computer system by your own, afterwards you will receive your boarding card; when you don’t have registered baggage is just faster to do it in check-in kiosk than in check-in desk; very common in low-cost carrier (when you forget to self-check-in you have to pay an extra fee)

shared-ride bus: bus service which is going around the city and dropping people in the place they want to leave (like taxi but with more people); synonym: door-to-door service

shuttle bus: bus which is going to one place and back (mostly to the city centre or bus/train station and back)

taxi rank: a place where you can find taxis

terminal: main building in the airport where you can find check-in desks, departure lounge, arrivals etc. Airports can have a few terminals (for different types of flights: domestic, international, low-cost etc.)

Ticketing: a place where you can buy tickets

transfer: when you are going from one flight to another; when you are changing airplanes (for connecting flight)

VAT refund: the return by the government of excess taxes

viewing deck/terrace: a place where you can watch surroundings, mostly you can see starting and landing airplanes; synonym: observation deck

visa on arrival: permit to enter and leave a country which is possible to buy at the airport when arriving

visa: permit to enter and leave a country, issued by the country to be visited

x-ray: a machine which is taking a roentgen photo to check what do you have inside your baggage
