Delayed flight is a situation when the flight is late more than 15 minutes.
When your flight is delayed Regulation EC 261/2004 is taking effect (when starting or landing in European Union and Iceland, Norway and Switzerland – except non-EU airline which is starting outside EU but landing inside EU). Moreover, the EU’s Court of Justice ruled in 2012 that passengers whose flight arrives three hours late or moreÂ can apply for financial compensation. If your flight is delayed you have some rights which depends of waiting time, flight distance and delay reason.

If an air carrier expect a flight to be delayed:
a) for 2 hours or more (in case of flights of 1500 km or less),
b) for 3 hours or more (in case of intra-Community flights of more than 1500 km and all other flights between 1500-3500 km),
c) for 4 hours or more (in case of all other flights than in points a) and b)),
operating air carrier should offer you:
a) meals and refreshments (adequate to the waiting time); and
b) 2 telephone calls, telex, fax messages or e-mails, free of charge; and
c) when expected time of departure is at least the day after previous departure time:
– hotel accommodation (when overnight stay become necessary),
– transport between accommodation and airport.
a) when the delay is at least 5 hours you have right to reimbursement within 7 days of the full costs of the ticket (at the price it was bought) for all parts of the journey not made, and for parts already made (when the next flight is no longer necessary, for example when you are going to see a football match but you are already late); and
b) return flight to the point where you start your journey (if you had connecting flight).
Financial compensation (when flight is late in a final destination for more than 3 hours):
a) 250 EUR (in case of flights of 1500 km or less),
b) 400 EUR (in case of intra-Community flights of more than 1500 km and all other flights between 1500-3500 km),
c) 600 EUR (in case of all other flights than in points a) and b)).
Compensation is paid in cash, electronic bank transfer, bank orders or cheques or in travel vouchers or/and other service (agreement must be signed by the passenger). The Distance is measured by the great circle route method in km.
Above regulation is not working when your flight is late because of extraordinary circumstances (beyond airlines ordinary â€“ like bad weather, strike or security reasons).

1. Traditional airline (legacy carrier): if you have all flight on one ticket and your flight is delayed the air carrier has to book a new ticket for you. BUT if you have â€˜point to pointâ€™ ticket (every flight on a different ticket) than no one can guarantee a new ticket for you (financial compensation is still possible when late for more than 3 hours).
2. Low-cost carrier: LCCâ€™s are mostly offering point to point flights and they are responsible for one part of your trip. If you are late for next flight you have to buy a new ticket by your own (financial compensation is still possible when late for more than 3 hours).
Remember that this regulation is working in European Union only. Until now the US does not have any regulations regarding delayed or cancelled flights.
